In the SPOTlight: Ulige Numre
“We could in theory be a death metal band as well as a swing jazz trio…”
Ulige Numre are one of the most talked about new Danish acts. Their hit single “København” recently reaped the prestigious Steppeulv Award for the Song of the Year. In the light of their SPOT performance we took the opportunity to ask them a few questions.
How would you describe your music to some who has never heard of you?
Four good friends playing indie rock with loads of guitars. On stage we expand our lineup with a trumpet and a trombone player. It’s honest and old-fashioned with a dynamic and modern approach.
What does “Ulige Numre” (odd numbers) refer to?
I once figured out some deeper meaning behind the name but I’ve actually forgotten it by now. I am happy with the bandname because it doesn’t spark a lot of weird associations, that could give people a hint of the genre. It could in theory be a death metal band as well as a swing jazz trio.
How did you guys meet?
Some of us are family, some of us school mates. We share a common passion for being in a band. We make a good team. We get to travel, laugh and share moments of joy together as friends which we are very grateful for.
What do your lyrics talk about?
Growing up, identity, youth, a lot of personal stuff. And love, of course.
The song that earned you the Steppeulv Award talks about Copenhagen. What is so special about this town?
It’s such a neat little metropolis. Probably too small to earn the term metropolis actually. I was born and raised here and the song deals with that. Fitting in, falling in love, etc.
Which artists influence your work?
Classic American songwriters as Dylan and modern indie bands as The Walkmen and Wilco.
What are your ambitions for the future?
To write a great debut album and keep developing our sound. Another goal is to quit our day jobs and be able to live as full time musicians.
What should we expect from your SPOT performance?
An excited band! We have shows from now and until SPOT almost every weekend so we should be also be pretty tight. And hopefully we’ll present a few new songs as well.
When should we expect a full release?
We hope to release our debut album around winter/spring 2013.
